The First of Many...

Teachery blog posts.  Okay, so if you didn't know this before, I am at school studying to be a teacher.  In my teacheresque classes, we learn all these different techniques to inspire learning in all these creative ways.  Here is one of the ways for us to help kids when it comes to art: making scribble cookies.
Scribble Cookies are what you do when you have all the nubs of crayons left and they're too little to draw with.  One way to make them is to put the crayon nubs in a muffin tin and put it in the oven on a VERY LOW heat so that they melt, but not catch fire.  Or you can melt crayons of like colors down in a pot on a low heat on the stove and pour them into candy/soap molds.  My friend Twylla came over to make crayons with me and here are the steps!

Step one:  Peel the wrappers off the crayons.  The easiest way to do that is to soak them ice cold water for about 5-10 minutes.

Step two:  Crack the crayons into smaller pieces so that they melt faster and place in a pot (a teflon coated pan makes things easier) Place the pan on a LOW heat.
Here we mixed colors, It generally works better if you group and melt like colors together.

Step Three:  Once the crayons are all melted, pour into molds.  We used candy molds for our frogs, butterflies and racecars.  The race car molds were meant for chocolate covered pretzels and we had problems with the crayony mixture spilling out the hole for the pretzel though.  We also used Soap molds for the 'girly' crayons.  Both types of molds are easily found at Hobby Lobby, Michaels or Joanns.  After the melted crayons are poured, immediately wipe out the pan with a damp paper towel.

Step four:  Let the crayons cool in the molds on a flat surface.  After they have cooled, you can put them in the fridge so that they release easier from the molds.

Step Five:  Pop crayons out of mold and enjoy coloring with your new scribble cookies!!! :)
These scribble cookies are layered like cakes.
Enjoy!
